1971 Events

A number of events took place during 1971 regarding to technology, independence and history while Pakistan and India were busy in war. The year 1971 seems important in the world history. Not for a single country but it covered most of the countries. The short summary of some major events is listed below.

In terms of technology, oil production began in Norway. Intel launched its first microprocessor 4004; this has been the first ever microprocessor in the history which gave an introduction to the world of technology. The first pocket calculator was released by Texas instruments. EMI produced the first CAT scanner. BBC Open University broadcasts started in the UK. Nisseki Maru was launched which was world largest tanker of 372400 tons. Space mission Apollo 14 landed on the moon whereas Apollo 15 astronauts had first ridden in a lunar rover. The first ever contact lens was provided commercially in the USA. Kevlar was introduced in the market, it is five times stronger than steel.

In terms of historical events, China was added in the United Nations. NASDAQ made its debut; it is a stock market index in the US. In 1971, there was a battle between the borders of India and Pakistan; this was the second battle between India and Pakistan after the independent states. Ibrox disaster took place which caused 66 causalities in a football match between Rangers and Celtic.

Peru earthquake took place which took away a number of residents. The voting age was lowered to 18 years in the United States. In Switzerland, women were given the right of voting. In Japan, 85m high Tsunami arose over Ryukyu Islands. Also, Tsunami killed 10,000 in Orissa state in India. Australia and New Zealand pulled out their troops from Vietnam. Also, Qatar and Sierra Leone got free from Great Britain. The New York Times started to publish Pentagon papers.
