In Pakistan, study of medicine has got a lot people prefer to study MBBS in some recognized and well known Institute and Sindh Medical College is one of those Institutes which get first attention of students. It is located in Karachi, Sindh Pakistan. There are many colleges in Pakistan which provide medical study to the eligible students and SMC is one of those colleges.
Sindh Medical College is located beside the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center in the Sindh’s provisional capital, Karachi and a famous Institute for the study of medical. The Sindh Medical College was established in 1973 after getting approval from the Government of Sindh in the first week of March. The first batch of students who took admission in this college for the study of MBBS was a group of two hundred students. This first batch had studied with the late Professor Doctor Khawaja Moin-ud-Din and with his project director and principal. This college has spent its early stages and beginning time in the Pediatrics ward at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center. It was an army barracks and remained in the possession of army from 1865 to 1958 which was converted in to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center in 1959.
From the establishment of Sindh Medical College in 1973, the management of college has made a hostel for boys’ and they also purchased a building to make it girls’ hostel, from PECHS. The Sindh Medical College is affiliated with the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center and with the National Institute of Child Health. It is also associated with the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases. Sindh Medical College becomes a part of the Dow University of Health Sciences in 2003. This Institute now also uses to share its faculty and other activates with other parts of DUHS. DOUHS is associated with DMC (Sow Medical College) and DIMC (Dow International Medical College), which are the parts of DUHS. The former Psychology department’s head of Sindh Medical College is now Dean at the DIMC (Dow International of Medical College).
The former president of Pakistan general Zia Ul Haq visited Sindh Medical College and promised to the students and management of SMC to upgrade it to the University level. Afterwards in 2010, the current president of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari also gave orders to upgrade this college but this order has not taken yet. Each year, more than three hundred students use to get admission in Sindh Medical College from the entire province to get their degree in Bachelors in Medicine, Bachelors in Surgery (MBBS). Sindh Medical College has given many respected doctors to the Pakistan like Professor Altaf hashmi, Doctor Imran Farooq, Doctor Huma Mir and Doctor Shaista Wahida, who both are a well known figure of Pakistan television, and many other great names.
